Artist Statement
Jewellery making found me at a time when I was searching for a language to express
myself beyond words. What began as a self-taught curiosity soon became a lifelong
passion for goldsmithing- a way to shape emotion, memory, and imagination into form. The natural world deeply inspires me: the rhythm of growth, the quiet strength in
organic textures, and the harmony of colour found outdoors. My process begins with
loose sketches, where ideas flow freely before taking shape in metal. Through casting,
fabrication, and the careful placement of gemstones, I bring those visions to life in silver
and gold. Each piece tells a story of transformation- of something imagined becoming
real, of beauty revealed through change. Creating jewellery allows me to translate what I
feel beneath the surface into something that can be worn, touched, and cherished.
Biography
Joy Kennedy-Udida is an Ontario-based goldsmith, designer, and entrepreneur, and a graduate of the Jewellery Arts program at George Brown College. With an unexpected beginning in accounting, she discovered jewellery making through a friend and quickly found a medium that allowed her creativity to flourish. What began as a self-taught exploration evolved into a dedicated pursuit of goldsmithing, where she continues to refine her skills and artistic voice.
Her work has been recognized through exhibitions, student showcases, and awards for excellence in jewellery design and craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from nature, Joy explores organic forms and subtle details through metal and gemstones. Her practice reflects a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and transformation, merging technical precision with expressive design.
